Equipment

  • Mason jar or airtight container (16 oz)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spoon or small spatula for stirring

Ingredients

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats do not use instant oats
  • 1 cup milk or milk alternative almond, oat, coconut, or whole milk all work
  • 4 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt adds creaminess and protein
  • 2 teaspoons chia seeds
  • 2 teaspoons maple syrup or honey adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt enhances overall flavor
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries for topping, add just before serving
  • 2 tablespoons nut butter almond or peanut butter, optional topping
  • 2 tablespoons granola optional topping for crunch

Instructions

  • Divide the rolled oats evenly between two mason jars or airtight containers, adding half a cup of oats to each jar.
  • Pour half a cup of milk into each jar. The 1:1 ratio of oats to liquid ensures the oats soak up enough moisture overnight without becoming watery.
  • Add two tablespoons of Greek yogurt, one teaspoon of chia seeds, one teaspoon of maple syrup, half a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to each jar.
  • Stir each jar thoroughly until all the ingredients are fully combined and the chia seeds are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
  • Seal the jars tightly with their lids and refrigerate for a minimum of 6 hours. Overnight (8 hours) gives the best creamy texture as the oats fully absorb the liquid.
  • In the morning, open the jars and stir the oats. If the mixture looks too thick for your preference, stir in a splash of additional milk until you reach your desired consistency.
  • Add toppings just before serving. Layer fresh berries, a drizzle of nut butter, and a sprinkle of granola on top. Enjoy cold straight from the jar or transfer to a bowl and warm briefly in the microwave if preferred.

Notes

For the creamiest results, always use old-fashioned rolled oats rather than quick or instant oats. Steel-cut oats can be used but require a full 24-hour soak. These keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, making them ideal for weekly meal prep. To freeze, store without toppings in freezer-safe jars for up to 3 months and thaw overnight in the refrigerator. For a high-protein version, add a scoop of vanilla protein powder or increase Greek yogurt to 4 tablespoons per jar. Nursing mothers can stir in a tablespoon of flaxseed meal to support milk supply.
